What Does It Mean to You?

April 15th. It’s tax day in the United States. It’s Jackie Robinson Day in the MLB, where all baseball players can wear the number 42 in his honor. In New England, it is Patriots Day. For my friend, today is a birthday that is hard to celebrate after laying her mom to rest last week. For many, April 15th is just another day.

The tempting question is to ask, “What should today mean to me?” The more powerful question is, “What does today mean to me?” A ‘should’ will often take you farther from your authentic self, while being mindful and present to what is real will help you grow. Be mindful of your own experience, be mindful of what you know about others’ experiences, and be mindful that there may be many other meanings that you will not know about but will impact others.
